Right now your business prospects couldn’t care less about your service.

Their thoughts are on this weekend’s party … wondering what the taste of turkey or roast beef will be on Saturday night … thinking how great it will be yukking it up with family members or friends.

The kids are home from school, co-workers bring homemade cookies to the office, and Christmas tree lights and decorations put a sparkle on all that we see.

Your prospects aren’t thinking about buying from you.

And yet this is one of the best times of the year to reach them with your email.

Why?

Because your email will be different.

Your email is the opportunity to show that you’re human … a real person with dreams, hopes, life experiences, and even frustrations. You’ll talk about this holiday season, and what it means to you.

And there’s something else that’s important ….

They want to know you’re human

You are not a faceless corporate entity – and your audience wants to know that.

Your email will tie together two things, like two ends of a shoestring.

These two things are 1) their need for your service, and 2) what makes you tick as a human being.

You will do this by riding the coattails of the holiday. Your audience needs a certain reaffirmation during this time – or any other holiday of the year. This affirmation is on the subject of what the holiday means to us as a people, a nation, as individuals or as a family. And they want to hear what you have to say about it. Some acknowledgment of their hopes, joys and even fears.

This holds true for the other major holidays of the year – Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving. And you can throw in the minor holidays between these events as well.

Holiday-themed emails are opened

How do I know that now is a good time to send your emails?

I see the results on my own lists.

I recently sent an email just a day before Christmas about how the Christmas story can be found in a certain native American legend, as shown in The Song of Hiawatha. (I happen to enjoy history and religion, and this theme appealed to me.)

Here are the open rates of my emails, to different business and personal mailing lists:

Open rates: 50%, 42%, 37%, 34%, and 13%.

These are high percentages, especially when the Apple devices block the tracking pixel.

And here’s a curious twist – do you know which of the above rate was obtained from my list of personal friends? 13%! And you would think that my friends would be most interested in my topic.

The other lists were my business audiences.

Don’t you think – this shows that people who have a business interest with you enjoy something personal?

And the holiday season is the best time to share at this level.

An email secret

Holiday seasons provide access to the hidden hopes and dreams of people. Their minds and hearts are open, like little birds opening their beaks for food from their mama.

Call it a weakness if you want….

But these are great times to reach your audience.

This seems to be a little-known secret. In all the hundreds of articles and books I’ve read on marketing and emails, I don’t recall any that unveiled the opportunity of a seasonal email.

So why not take advantage of it?
