When Joshua Placencio’s grandfather became ill, he had to quit his job as an activities assistant for a physical rehab company in Arlington Heights.
He moved into his grandparent’s home to become his grandfather’s caregiver. He showered him, cleaned him, and took him to appointments. “I really grew a newfound appreciation for caregiving,” he recalled.
“I came to appreciate all the hard work, all the emotions involved,” he said. His grandmother was living there also, and although she provided emotional support, she was not able to supply her husband’s physical needs.
After about three months of helping out, the family found a better situation for the grandfather, with nurses staying at the home full time.
