Mobile-friendly is what it’s all about

When we moved into our neighborhood several years ago, I met a retired lady who lives a few doors down. She seemed to be in good health and keeps her flowers on the porch looking very good.

We got to talking, and then I explained how I serve the senior service market with promotion services. We talked about computers. Then she told me something very interesting.

“I don’t use my laptop any more,” she said. “My cell phone does everything I need.”

This brings me to today’s topic. Is your senior care website mobile friendly? Does it download quickly? Is your material attractively displayed on your page?

I wonder how many seniors are leaving your website because it is not mobile-friendly?

In recent years, more and more people – including those in their 50s and above – are turning to mobile devices to browse the internet. They are picking up their smartphone and tossing their laptop.

Marketing expert Somya Mehta says,

“It comes without a doubt that the invention of mobiles has given rise to the migration of online activities away from PCs, albeit slow and steady. Smartphones have only boosted that migration, making the switch from PCs to mobile-first much faster.” (SmartInsights, April 12, 2018)

Baby-boomers start with mobile 20% of time

Of 34 online activities used by baby-boomers age 55 – 64, as tracked by Global Web Index (See SmartInsights.com), 7 used a mobile device first rather than a desktop. This is 20%. (See graph above.) If you include those 65 and above, that number would obviously be higher. This percentage will likely increase as younger generations, who grew up with the internet, enter their senior years.

Do you want to lose 20% of your potential clients?

I’m sure the answer is no.

Some of your web visitors come through your email newsletters as well as directly from the internet. In our own experience, 33% of those who open our emails do so on a mobile device. Of those, 2.9% are clicking through to one of our websites. I’m sure you’d agree that you would want these folks to go to a website that can be viewed on a mobile device.

Advance of cellular

Cellular technology and its usage is advancing all the time. The year 2018 is expected to be the first year of rolling out 5G connections. One expert said,

“… this year will likely go into the history books as the start of an even bigger societal change. 5G and the Internet of Things [network of physical objects that feature internet connectivity] promise new capabilities and use cases, which are set to impact not only consumer services but also many industries embarking on their digital transformations.” (Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Business Area Networks. Key sites to find your site’s mobile-friendliness

Have you looked at your website on a smartphone lately? Plug your website’s URL into Google’s mobile-friendly test. Or find your pages’ download speeds at Pingdom.com. (Google likes a three second or less download speed.) People aren’t patient. If your website pages load like molasses, viewers will flee for your competition.

Maybe it’s time to rebuild your website to be mobile-friendly and fast. Don’t be satisfied with the way it is now. (Mobile-friendly is also called mobile responsive in the industry.)

We at Savvy Senior Marketing can design a beautiful website for you that is informative, attractive, and mobile-friendly. We can also give you a free 15-minute analysis of your site.
