Google can offer endless ideas on this, but here’s a practical example from my own experience: I send out greeting cards to discharge planners at rehabs on behalf of my home care clients. While not technically “lumpy mail,” these feel-good cards with personal notes consistently get opened—and they deliver results. Why? Because they’re personal and engaging.

The “Wow” Factor of Lumpy Mail

The magic of lumpy (or 3D) mail lies in its ability to stand out. Whether it’s larger than expected or looks like a gift, people open it out of curiosity and even a sense of appreciation. One marketer added a small toy soldier to their mail with a crooked stamp for added intrigue. The letter inside cleverly tied the toy soldier to their product. It’s creative, memorable, and impossible to overlook.

Branded Gifts: A Lasting Impression

One of our home care clients took a different approach: they wanted to send branded gifts. We suggested cell phone chargers with their logo on them. Now, every time a recipient charges their phone, they’re reminded of the agency. It’s functional, branded, and keeps the agency top of mind.
