Pay for Conversions, not Clicks
If you’ve ever searched for a plumber, electrician, or HVAC technician in a pinch, you’ve probably noticed those neat little business profile boxes sitting right at the absolute top of Google. Those are Local Services Ads (LSAs), and if you run a service-based business, they might just be your new best friend.
Here is a simple, no-nonsense breakdown of how Local Services Ads work, how they’re different from traditional search ads, and how you can use them to stand out.
Prime Real Estate: Right at the Very Top
Traditional Google Ads (PPC) are great, but LSAs take prime real estate to a whole new level. They appear at the very top of Google search results, placing your business above standard paid search ads as well as organic map listings. When someone in your local area searches for a quick solution to a problem, your business is the first thing they see.
Pay ONLY for Lead Conversions, Not Clicks
With classic Google Ads, you pay every time someone clicks on your ad—whether they call you, hire you, or immediately leave your site. LSAs flip this model on its head: you pay per conversion or near-conversion, not per click. You’re not paying for passive website browsers; you’re paying for actual potential customers reaching out directly to your business.
Verification & Trust Badges
Before your ad goes live, Google puts your business through a thorough verification process. Depending on your industry and location, this includes:
- Background checks for business owners and field employees
- License checks to ensure you are legally operating
- Insurance verification to confirm active liability coverage.
Once you pass, Google awards you a badge—the Google Guaranteed or Google Screened badge. This extra layer of trust makes prospective customers feel much more comfortable picking up the phone.
What Counts as a Charged Conversion (and What Doesn’t)?
Since you only pay for legitimate leads, it helps to know what actually triggers a charge.
What You DO Pay For:
- Phone calls that last beyond a minimal duration (typically around 30 to 60 seconds)
- Direct text or chat messages sent through the ad interface
- Direct appointment booking requests
- Voicemails left by prospective customers calling through the ad.
What You DO NOT Pay For:
- Standard clicks
- Website links
- Impressions
- Simple viewings of your profile.
You also do not pay for disputed leads such as spam, wrong numbers, or calls asking for services you do not actually offer. If you get one of these, you can dispute the charge with Google to get a credit back.
How to Stand Out: Highlight Your Unique Selling Proposition (USP)
When potential customers see a row of verified local businesses, why should they choose yours? This is where your Unique Selling Proposition (USP) comes in.
To win the job, highlight specific features or specialized offerings that set your company apart from competitors.
- An HVAC company might highlight 24/7 emergency repairs, same-day heat and AC fixes, or free second opinions on system replacements.
- A plumbing company could emphasize no after-hours or weekend fees, hydro-jetting expertise, or trenchless sewer repairs.
A Crucial Note About Your Google Business Profile
Unlike standard Google Search Ads, LSAs do not drive traffic to your company’s website. Everything the customer sees comes directly from your Google Business Profile and LSA account setup. If you want a specific USP, service highlight, or feature to show up on your ad, it must be reflected in your Google Business Profile and LSA settings. Make sure your listed services, operating hours, highlights, and customer reviews are accurate, up to date, and showcase what makes your company special.
Are Non-Medical Home Care Agencies Eligible for Local Services Ads?
Since we at Savvy Senior Marketing specialize in home care marketing, we thought we’d add this sobering note. Google maintains a very strict list of supported LSA industries. While Google includes certain care and health categories like child care, pet care, veterinarians, physical therapists, or primary care physicians, in-home care is different. Thus, services for seniors, elderly, or adults requiring non-medical personal care are excluded from LSAs. This is because standard LSA background checks and “Google Guarantee/Screened” onboarding is difficult to standardize nationwide or by state.
If you haven’t run Local Service Ads, we at Savvy Senior Marketing would be happy to set you up and start your campaign. Our maintenance plan includes a monitoring service where we go to bat for you to contact Google to challenge disputed leads.
