Using Google Ads to Catch Home Care Clients

If you love fishing, you check your tackle, make sure your line is strong, and head out into open water.

Most anglers motor straight for the cove where all the other boats already are. It’s crowded, but at least you know there are fish there — everyone else found them first.

Here’s the better move: keep looking. Somewhere nearby is a smaller, quieter inlet — one the crowd hasn’t discovered. Fewer boats, less competition, and the fish haven’t seen a hundred lures already that day.

Online advertising for an independent home care agency works the same way. The “crowded cove” is the obvious, expensive keywords that every big franchise bids on. Your job is to find the quieter water nearby — searches with keywords that you’ve optimized better than the competition.

Fishing for the Right Keywords

In a Google Ads campaign we’ve been running for an independent home care agency, we found exactly this kind of quiet inlet.

The keyword “hire caregiver” cost us $3.12 per click. The much more common keyword “personal care services” cost $4.58 per click — 47% more, for the same kind of prospect. And we’re likely to bring down the cost per click even more as we tweak the campaign.

Why the gap? Likely two reasons working together:

  1. Less competition. The big franchise brands pour money into “personal care services” because it’s the obvious, broad term. Fewer of them are bidding on “hire caregiver,” so the price stays low.
  2. A stronger match. Our landing page spoke directly to the intent behind “hire caregiver,” and Google rewards that relevance with a lower cost per click.

But the price isn’t even the most useful part of this discovery. It’s what the keyword tells you about the person searching it.

“Personal care services” is a research phrase — someone early in the process, still learning what their options are. “Hire caregiver” is a decision phrase — someone who has already done the homework and is now ready to act. They’re not asking “what is home care?” anymore. They’re asking “who do I call?”

That means your landing page has one job for that visitor: answer the specific question they’re already asking and make it easy to take the next step.

Bringing the Boat In Closer

This particular campaign is new. As we refine the keyword list further, we’ll get even better at finding the exact families searching for care in their area right now. Each adjustment brings the boat a little closer to where the fish actually are.

Keyword selection is just one of the many settings in a Google Ads campaign, but it’s one of the most important — because it determines who sees your ad and what they’re already thinking when they do. As you are certainly aware, search algorithms are evolving fast, with AI-powered search reshaping how people look for services.

But the use of keywords won’t disappear entirely. They will be morphed into the next iteration of ad algorithms. Google search ads still command a huge share of ad traffic, and agencies that fish in the right water are catching prospects that the bigger players are paying too much to reach — or missing entirely.
